Da Lat Railway Station

Da Lat Railway Station was designed by French architects Moncet and Revéron, featuring a design deeply rooted in local character. The structure is logically and scientifically organized yet aesthetically refined. It boasts a symmetrical layout, with a central section mimicking the three peaks of Langbiang Mountain and the traditional *Rong* communal houses of the Central Highlands, flanked by two elongated wings. Centered beneath the roof on the exterior is a large clock marking the time when Dr. Alexandre Yersin discovered Da Lat. The central block features two front halls—one for passengers and one for cargo—with the waiting area situated between them. This central section consists of a single story, offering a spacious interior that extends vertically to the roof. Overall, the architecture harmonizes with the natural surroundings, serving as a unique urban landmark. Da Lat Railway Station was recognized as a National Historical-Cultural Relic in 2001.

Although no longer connected to Vietnam’s national railway network, Da Lat Railway Station remains a popular tourist attraction. It operates a tourist train—comprising one locomotive and four carriages—that runs to and from Trai Mat Station (Ward 11, Da Lat City). Located 7 km east of Da Lat, the journey takes approximately 25 minutes, allowing passengers to admire the city’s romantic suburban scenery along the way. Upon arriving at Trai Mat Station, visitors can explore Linh Phuoc Pagoda (also known as *Chua Ve Chai* or the “Bottle Pagoda”), a renowned and unique temple.

The Flavors of Da Lat

If Da Lat’s scenery inspires love at first sight, it is the local cuisine that ensures visitors remember the city long after they leave. Amidst the mountain town’s signature chilly weather, simple yet hearty, piping-hot dishes taste better than ever.

A Da Lat morning might begin with a steaming bowl of *bánh mì xíu mại* (baguette with meatball stew) or a serving of *bánh căn* (mini savory pancakes) fresh off the grill. With their golden-brown crusts and soft, fragrant centers—complemented by a savory dipping sauce and hot meatballs—these dishes define the city’s morning atmosphere.

As afternoon turns to evening, Da Lat’s grilled rice paper (*bánh tráng nướng*) becomes a favorite street food. Grilled until crispy over charcoal, the rice paper is topped with egg, scallions, meat, and other ingredients. Holding a hot, crispy piece of *bánh tráng* and enjoying it right on the street amidst the cool mountain air is an unforgettable experience.

Come evening, as the temperature drops further, a steaming pot of *lẩu gà lá é* (chicken hotpot with lemon basil) is the ideal choice. The aromatic broth, featuring the mild spiciness of lemon basil paired with tender chicken, creates a dish that is both flavorful and warming—perfect for sharing with family and friends.

Beyond its famous dishes, Da Lat also charms visitors with simple beverages. A glass of hot soy milk accompanied by a few pastries on a chilly evening can become one of the trip’s most cherished memories.

And it would be a mistake to mention Da Lat without talking about coffee. Cafés nestled in pine forests, perched on hillsides, or tucked away in quiet street corners offer visitors more than just a fragrant cup of coffee; they provide a space to gaze out at the city and savor a sense of peace.

Da Lat’s cuisine is unpretentious. These are familiar dishes and well-loved flavors, yet they are enjoyed in a truly unique setting—amidst the chilly mist, the sloping streets, and the city’s golden lights.

Da Lat is not merely a sightseeing destination; it is a place to slow down, feel, and truly savor the moment. From lush green pine forests, vibrant flower seasons, and misty slopes to steaming hot dishes enjoyed in the cool air, every experience contributes to the unique character of Da Lat. You might visit out of a love for nature, a desire for a getaway, or simply to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. Yet, when you leave, what lingers are likely the peaceful moments, familiar flavors, and a touch of nostalgia for this highland city.
